News of community and professional theatre
Dave’s back with more news after kind of a hiatus, but things are hopping with the Geeks, and you’ll hear more as the summer progresses.
- Ovation Inflation — The New York Times – this is a pet peeve of Marcia’s and we’ll definitely be talking about it again in a future episode.
- Is Willie Loman Jewish? New York Times — provocative article discusses some positions on both sides. Apparently playwright Arthur Miller wrote some stories involving Jewish characters, several of whom could have been the prototype for Willie. Why did Miller remove any reference to Willie’s religion in the final play? Maybe to make him more of an everyman, and to more tightly focus on the real story, which is Willie’s disintegration. What do you think?
- Drama Book Shop in New York is a place not to be missed — New York Times. Last time I (Dave) visited the Drama Book Shop it was still on 7th Avenue, but it’s in a newer better location now. If the Times article is right, it’s still a magical place for the true theatre geek.
- Hugh Jackman does a humorous promo for Harlem Village Academy – Linked from Broadwayworld.com
- Epidemic, a show about obesity, opens in London this weekend — Whatsonstage.com — Show developed from interviews with Londoners about what they felt were important issues that concerned them.
- Drama League Awards announced Friday – Backstage.com
- More TV Production in NYC — Backstage.com
